“...energized, vibrant, both powerful and intimate, are just a few words to describe what Jared Brown and John Magoon bring to their group, Allegash...the harmonies are great...Allegash immediately captures their audience...”

Allegash opened for
Tom Rush in July of 2006.
They received the following email from Tom.

Reviews from recent
performance at THE ACOUSTIC CAFE (audience 125) in Milford . Celebrating the
release of their 3rd CD- BORDERLINE …their music has GREAT
poetry! Their different vocal styles somehow meld into a sum that is
greater than its parts… … poignant lyrics…
there is a universality to your songs that is appealing; a familiar story with
a new perspective that demands reexamining one's feelings and beliefs… …not
quite folk but not quite soft rock either. I loved listening to the songs…I’ve
pretty much already worn out their CD back and forth… unique blend of guitar, keyboard,
and lyrics unlike anything I’ve heard anywhere else…refreshing and
unique…
“... Allegash gave a performance at our annual event and the
audience loved them! Their
music touches the heartstrings
and brings me back to another time and place. I look forward to attending more
concerts and definitely will be watching for new CD’s. I’m hooked on their
two CD’s, Take Me Down and Ghost Song… Top-rate music! Thanks guys for such an enjoyable evening.”

The Rush of Allegash
By Kathleen Baglio
Humphreys
An eight grade teacher and a Currier Lumber employee are making great music together again, 20 years after putting their collaboration aside. Jared Brown and John Magoon have reunited to form “Allegash” which will perform on Labor Day at the Old Meeting House of Francestown during their annual Labor Day celebration.
Both Folk/Rock musicians grew up in Amherst and have been inspired by music most of their lives. Magoon is one of the most requested studio musicians in the region. He is Allegash’s producer and performs back-up vocals for the band and is a highly skilled piano and guitar player. Brown’s rich, smooth voice leads the band’s songs while he plays acoustic guitar. He also writes all their songs.
The duo performed together 25 years ago. “I returned from out West with a batch of original tunes and looked up the best musician in the area, John Magoon. We played night and day for nearly a year. It's no exaggeration to say that we were feeling a great wave of inspiration,” said Brown. Unexpectedly, John’s girlfriend became ill and passed away. “She was a wonderful person and had been as inspired as we were about the music. Her death took the wind out of us,” added Brown.

The band members went their separate ways but four-years ago during a flurry of song writing, Brown tentatively called Magoon to reunite. “We've been meeting every week since. We've completed two CDs of original music: Blue Moon and Ghost Song, and are presently recording our third CD, Borderline.
The band performs about a once a month and opened for Tom Rush this past July. After the concert, Rush was quoted as saying, "Allegash was a great act to watch, but a hard act to follow," which was certainly a feather in their caps.
Brown has made it his
mission to focus on the art of writing music and has engulfed himself into
studying the techniques. Last fall,
Brown attended a week-long TAXI Song Writing Convention in Los Angeles where he
worked on his song-writing techniques at classes with 600 other songwriters and
attended lectures from five major record label companies. “I came back from
that conference high as a kite. You can't beat the pure joy of song writing; emotionally, intellectually, instrumentally,” said Brown.

At a recent rehearsal they
performed a few original songs that were both entertaining and thought
provoking and one that would hit home to local people called “The Mayor of
Milford” about a homeless man, Jimmy Carter, who came from a wealthy family and
perished on a cold winter's night under a bridge in Milford.
